It was a night of celebration and achievements of women from all walks of life in Oman’s diverse and thriving community, showcasing extraordinary examples of courage, triumph, compassion, transformation, skills and success.
In its second year, Oman Woman of the Year Awards 2019 event held at Grand Hyatt Muscat on Thursday played host to women business chiefs, community leaders, politicians, entrepreneurs, celebrities and other well-known figures from Oman’s private, public and voluntary sectors.
Organised by Apex Media, the evening belonged to the women, with few men attending to cheer as 26 winners from varied backgrounds were awarded for their achievements.
Addressing the gathering, Saleh Zakwani, chairman of Apex Media, said he was proud of the winners and thanked the sponsors.
The audience comprised guests nominated for the various awards along with their family members, friends and colleagues who were present in large numbers to cheer them. Each winner walked up to the dais with light music in the background and amidst the thunderous applause of guests around.
Hon Yuthar al Rawahy, founder and former chairperson of the Oman Cancer Association, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award, said, “I wish to dedicate this award to all the cancer survivors in Oman as well as those who have succumbed to the disease. The work we do comes straight from the heart and it is not intended for any award. I would like to tell young women that life is full of challenges but we must take them head-on. If you have the passion, you will definitely overcome your challenges.”
Lujaina M Darwish, who received the Inspirational Woman award, said she felt blessed that her hard work has been recognised.
“I feel proud as well as happy that, being a woman, I could do a lot for society and particularly for women in Oman. My message to young women is that the sky is the limit. All the hard work you do will surely get returns some day. So, keep going and one day you will keep smiling.”
